Warming Hand and Body Lotion

Have you ever applied a lotion to the skin and then fill it start to warm up?  This process is known as microencapsulation. This technology has been around for many many years, and you have probably seen it but to use in such applications as scratch and sniff stickers, scratch and sniff perfume ads in magazines, time release pharmaceuticals, and carbonless copy paper.

Microencapsulation is the creation of a tiny capsule usually just microns in diameter, usually containing a particular material or substance. When left undisturbed the warming hand and body lotion containing microencapsulation it remains as normal lotion. When the lotion is disturbed and moved around this causes the capsule or shell to rupture and release its core material. As its core material mixes with the materials found in the lotion a small chemical reaction occurs producing what you feel as heat.

In addition to being used in hand and body lotions, microencapsulation can be found in all sorts of applications. Microencapsulation can be found in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, cosmetic, and food industries. It has been used to to encapsulate oils, aqeous solutions, alcohols, and various solids.

You have probably seen his and hers lotions, that come in two separate containers. Microencapsulation works in the same way, it just keeps all the material together in one container. So after reading this article you may never apply hand or body warming lotion on without thinking of microencapsulation. Who would have ever thought that so much work went into such a tiny bottle?
